The Camino walk has been completed

The Camino de Santiago Walk

This was the second most important pilgrimage in Medieval Europe after the pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Millions of pilgrims walked from every part of Europe on different routes over many centuries, almost half not returning.

Traditionally the Camino began at one's own front door. Members of every strata of society have traversed the Camino from Kings and Queens to beggars.

The walk is steeped in history. The Knights' Templar played a role in the protection of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago from the Moors in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Their beautiful churches and fortifications can be seen along the route. After twelve centuries as a pilgrimage, it almost died out completely by the 1980s when only a handful of people made the walk each year. Since then there has been a surge of interest in the Camino.

The Regenesis participants will walk the 800 km 'Francis route' (walked by St Francis of Assisi) from the French Pyrenees, across Northern Spain to Santiago cathedral where the remains of the apostle James are held. They will trek across country on walking tracks, carrying all their possessions on their backs and sleeping in simple pilgrims hostels or in the open.

Because of their success at the Regenesis Program, participants of the Program believe others should also have the opportunity to reclaim their lives. To this end these participants developed this project, a sponsored walk on the Camino de Santiago.

Participants are paying their own expenses and devoting their time to walk the 800kms pilgrimage across Northern Spain. As an act of 'giving something back' the participants want to raise $10,000 to build a kindergarten to care for the children of low income working women in rural Vietnam as part of the work of another Australian charity, The Vietnam Children's Project. The remainder raised will be donated to Regenesis.

The participants are being supported by staff and friends of Regenesis in their quest. This project is the culmination of the journey they have made from a life limited by addiction to one of voluntary creative responsibility for who they want to be in the world and how as individuals choose to shape that world.

Your support is a vital part of this wonderful project. The participants are looking for sponsorships of dollars per kilometre walked. Sponsorship Form

A typical day on The Camino begins before daybreak with abolitions and preparation for the walk.

Most people are on the track as the sun rises. Some have a simple breakfast before setting out. Most walk for one to two hours on the look out for one of the many small cafes or bars open at that hour to feed the pilgrims and breakfast there.

Setting off again, walkers ensure they have enough water and a snack and walk for another two hours. Some walkers rest up during this break before the last couple of hours of walking to get to the Refugios, the pilgrim hostels.

Once at the Refugio, around midday, it's time to wash clothes, shower, eat and rest.

Late afternoon and evening are a time to explore the usually rich culture of the area around the Refugio, eat the main meal of the day and catch up with other walkers.

People go to bed with the sun in preparation for the early start next morning.

Regenesis has been involved in and is supporting the formation of a Community Drug Action Team (CDAT) for the Southern Highlands. CDAT's are part of the NSW Government strategies in response to the NSW Drug Summit held in 1999. They are a forum for government and communities to work together on substance misuse issues. Anyone can participant and it is hoped that more community members will support this initiative and be involved.

If you are a community member or service in the Southern Highlands and would like more information about how to be involved in this CDAT, please contact,
